Concrete masonry describes the use of concrete products in the creation of different types of structures. Typically, this form of masonry will take on one of two different forms, individual concrete masonry units that are assembled and held in place with mortar or grout, or concrete that is poured into a mold or other type of enclosure to create a solid surface of some type. Concrete masonry can be used to create walls, floors, foundation slabs and a number of other types of building components.

One common example of concrete masonry is the concrete wall. Arranging concrete blocks in a predetermined pattern creates this particular type of structure. In order to make sure the blocks remain in position, they are normally laid with the use of some type of mortar or grout between each of the blocks. Once the mortar sets and dries, the wall is sturdy and capable of standing for decades.

An alternative to traditional concrete walls is the creation of what is known as a tilt-up wall. This process calls for making use of a simple mold that is capable of holding a wet concrete mixture that can be poured into the mold. After the concrete dries, the solid panel is removed from the mold and can easily be secured in position.

In addition to the creation of walls, both of these techniques can be used successfully to create patio slabs, foundational slabs for homes, and even to create walkways and driveways. Concrete masonry can also be used to create interior floors that may be painted and sealed in lieu of using vinyl, carpeting, or some other floor covering for the space. When prepared and treated with the right type of sealing agent, the masonry can hold up to extensive wear and tear over a number of years, without sustaining any significant damage.

While concrete masonry can be created at the building site, there is also the option of purchasing blocks and panels that are already cured and treated from a number of distributors. Many home supply stores will carry a line of concrete blocks that are ideal for use in creating everything from walls along property lines to a simple block pathway through a backyard garden. In like manner, it is possible to purchase flat panels of concrete masonry that work very well for creating small patio areas in back yards or even as the means of creating a durable tabletop for outdoor use.
