What are Overhead Traveling Cranes?

Alexis W.

Overhead traveling cranes are special machines used in construction. Overhead traveling cranes are designed so they do not get in the way of the area where other construction work is being done. Instead, they are used above the ground level or the level of the first floor. An overhead traveling crane makes doing difficult construction work above ground level elevation possible, while allowing the worker performing tasks above ground to keep out of the way of the construction activity on the ground.

Overhead traveling cranes are simple in appearance. These cranes are strong instruments shaped like a long bar that stands above the working space. This means that the cranes can be used to carry materials and move them across a room, often helping to lift and place problematic or awkward building materials.

Depending on the make and model of the overhead crane, the colors and general structure might vary. Invariably, however, the crane is made of a durable metal that is not susceptible to rust or corrosion, as some cranes may be kept for periods of time at outdoor work sites. Typically, the overhead cranes are made using alloy steels, lifting parts, ropes, and chains. Since the cranes are referred to as traveling cranes, many also have components designed to make the cranes easier to move. There are models of such cranes that can be used inside as well as outside.

Although overhead traveling cranes are designed to be moved, the cranes need to be professionally installed. The overhead traveling cranes must also be monitored by a trained professional. Monitoring is required because, despite the strong quality of most of these cranes, it is important to ensure weight capacity limits are followed to ensure there is no damage to the machine that could cause a weakening of its parts and create a dangerous situation.

When overhead traveling cranes are kept on a construction site, it becomes possible to move awkward and heavy steel bars, concrete materials, and other objects with more speed and precision. When such cranes are used safely and properly, they can make the workspace less hazardous and more organized. Furthermore, workers are able to save energy and move things with more efficiency while working. The strong equipment is able to give the same kind of mechanical help indoors as well, and the cranes can often make difficult work in an enclosed space a much more controlled experience.
